Sometimes, less is more. Among the wide selection of complex, high-performance aircraft with IFR-capable instrument panels available for sale, a simple, basic alternative can present certain advantages. This is certainly the case with this smart-looking 1975 Cessna 150M available for $48,000 on AircraftForSale

Since its introduction in 1958, it has been a main staple of the flight training fleet, and nearly 24,000 examples were built until it was discontinued in 1977. Accordingly, parts availability and easily sourced maintenance expertise are virtually unmatched in the general aviation fleet. To owners of less common types, these benefits are not insignificant.

Among the various 150 subtypes produced over the years, this late-model example is visually defined by its modern-looking swept vertical stabilizer and large rear windows. This compares to earlier models that had large, straight vertical stabilizers and a “fastback” design that provided no rearward visibility. Early 150s also offered less volume in the storage area behind the two seats.

While relatively modern touches abound here, most of the features for which 150s are known and loved remain. Massive Fowler-style flaps with a maximum setting of 40 degrees enable short, steep approaches, the flight controls are fingertip-light and precise, and the published 122 MPH cruising speed comes at the cost of less than 6 gallons per hour.

This particular 150 has 5,860 hours on the airframe and 964 hours on the engine since major overhaul. The modern paint job is said to be in good condition and is sharper than much of the 150 fleet. The included wheel pants offer a few additional knots of cruise speed along with good looks.

The seller has not hesitated to invest in the maintenance of this 150. A new exhaust, flap motor, tires, and battery have been installed, and both the magnetos and carburetor have been overhauled. It includes complete logs, and has been owned by the same family for the past 33 years.

Inside, the interior has also been well maintained. The plastic interior trim is in decent shape, and the seats have a nice, retro look that is well-matched to the exterior paint. While it lacks some of the more advanced avionics available today, the panel is clean and intact – far nicer than the sloppy, crudely modified panels found in many 150s.

For an economical, easy-to-own airplane that works well as a trainer or as a fun escape to fly-ins and $100 hamburgers, this 150 will likely provide its next caretaker with many years of great flying.

At some point, anyone who has dreamed of aircraft ownership has also dreamed of piloting their own Piper Cub with the door wide open as they lazily meander over fragrant hayfields in the waning golden light of a perfect summer evening. The Piper J-3 Cub defines grassroots simplicity. With a bare minimum of creature comforts, a sparse instrument panel consisting of only six gauges, and no electrical system, this example is perfectly representative of the type. Typically, rare, museum-quality aircraft from the golden era of aviation with a modern restoration go for princely sums of money and include princely operating budgets to boot. But there are occasional exceptions to this rule, and if you’re lucky enough to find one, chances are, it will still cost more than the $57,000 asking price for this 1946 Culver Dart GC listed on AircraftForSale.

The Dart was unique from the beginning. Designed in the 1930s with the help of Al Mooney, it sported several different engine options, mostly 90-horsepower radials and the slightly more powerful Continental O-200 of Cessna 150 fame. With a fabric-covered wooden airframe, nicely rounded tips on the wing and horizontal stabilizer, and a jaunty stance on its tailwheel gear, it looks as though it’s enthusiastically anticipating the next opportunity to fly.

This particular Dart is especially unique. Rather than leaving the pilot with only around 100 horsepower and precious little excess thrust to clear departure-end obstacles, it has a one-time STC for a 150-horsepower Lycoming O-320. This notable increase in power is sure to deliver bigger climb rates and bigger smiles alike, particularly as it’s fully stressed for aerobatic flight.

The Dart’s new owner will likely go many years without significant scheduled maintenance concerns. With only 1,000 hours on the airframe, 466 on the engine since major overhaul, and entirely new Polyfiber fabric installed in 2004, the most significant items have been addressed.

Although fewer than 100 Darts were produced, some 20 remain on the FAA registry today. So, while the type is indeed rare, a small community of owners exists that might be leveraged for ownership support. It’s not every day a unique and nearly pristine golden-age classic becomes available, and it’s especially rare that one comes up for a price on par with a new pickup truck.

Fun and affordability often top the list of priorities for any airplane owner. One effective way to enjoy both qualities is with a lively taildragger that provides good, basic functionality without complications. At $35,500—less than the price of a base Ford F-150 pickup—today’s bargain offers a compelling blend of qualities that might be impossible to beat.

Launched as a basic, budget version of the already simple Cessna 140, the 120 is almost identical to its compatriot. Identifiable by the lack of rear/side windows and flaps, the 120 is otherwise almost identical to the 140, and owners observe that the 140’s flaps offer little benefit, to begin with. This particular 120 has been modified with a metalized wing, which eliminates the need to periodically undergo the expensive process of replacing wing fabric at the cost of a bit of useful load.

One of the most attractive aspects of this particular 120 is the engine. What was once a basic Continental C85 has been upgraded with an O-200 crankshaft, providing a noticeable boost in performance. The engine has only 168 hours since major overhaul and has new Superior cylinders, magnetos, and a new alternator, checking some major maintenance boxes for the new owner.

Inside, this 120 sports custom leather seats and a simple yet logical panel layout. The original antiquated switches have been replaced with modern toggles and a push-button starter. Additional weight savings could be easily achieved by replacing the venturi-driven gyro instruments with modern digital gauges.

With engine overhauls on six-cylinder Continentals approaching $40,000 with wait times of several months, there’s a lot to be said for purchasing an airplane with all of those headaches behind it. With only 100 hours since major overhaul on the engine and propeller, today’s bargain does just that and is available for $99,000 on AircraftForSale.

Ownership doesn’t come much easier than in the form of a proven Cessna 172. With so many examples manufactured over the years, both parts and qualified service are easily sourced. Additionally, the flying qualities are fantastic, whether training, pleasure flying, cross-countries, or a combination of it all is the task at hand.

Built in 1965, this F-model sports the earliest engine fitted to the 172, the Continental O-300. With six cylinders and 145 horsepower, this engine has two more cylinders and fifteen fewer horsepower than later 172s. In exchange for the lower power rating, the six-cylinder is well-respected among owners for its surprisingly smooth operation and robust durability. It’s also known for powering the airplane that to this day holds the endurance record, staying aloft for a staggering 64 days.

While staying aloft for months at a time and refueling in flight from automobiles below might not be in your plans, enjoying safety and reliability between burger stops might. One of the worst things one can do to an airplane is let it sit unused. Conversely, one of the very best things one can do is fly it regularly and maintain it with an open checkbook. Today’s bargain is firmly in the latter category and is available for $79,950 on AircraftForSale.

Cessna 150s and 152s run the gamut between $25,000 basketcases in need of paint and engine overhauls on up to better-than-new, museum-quality examples with six-figure prices. While trending toward the upper end of the price range, this 152 has a lot going for it. Not only have many parts been upgraded—it’s been meticulously maintained and flown an average of 200 hours per year for the last five years.

Among the various modifications, one of the most notable is the complete removal of the vacuum system. In its place are two AV30s, a Garmin Aera 660 GPS, and a Garmin GTX345 transponder with ADS-B in and out. A new nav/com and dual USB ports complete the refreshed panel, and a Tanis preheat system ensure cold weather doesn’t bring your flying to a halt.

A total of 1,134 hours since major overhaul on the Lycoming O-235 means the engine is approximately halfway to TBO. This equates to many years of flying for most owners. Today’s bargain will transport its new owner back in time to the WWII era. Better yet, with the most major restoration items already completed, it will do so with the bare minimum of operating expense. This great combination of heritage and economy is available for $35,000 on AircraftForSale.

First flown in 1944, the Aeronca Champion—commonly called the “Champ”—was designed to compete with the Piper J3 Cub. Like the Cub, the Champ utilizes a fabric-covered, tubular metal fuselage and a small four-cylinder Continental engine. This particular example has a 75-horsepower Continental A75 with only 281 hours since major overhaul.

The 3,382-hour airframe has been similarly freshened up, with new covering installed in 2010. Given the longevity of modern fabric systems, this is likely to last for decades before requiring replacement. Such improvements should be taken into account when shopping around, as a complete recovering will cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Inside, things are simple. A basic VFR panel greets the pilot, who, unlike the Piper Cub, may sit in the front seat when flying solo. This provides far greater outward visibility and feels considerably less claustrophobic than the Cub.

Perhaps best of all, enough Champs were manufactured over the years that parts are readily available. Additionally, owner groups provide a fantastic community and friendly support as they welcome newcomers into the fold.

Today’s bargain unlocks off-airport and backcountry adventures for less than the price of many Cessna 150s. One of the most popular experimental aircraft available, the Kitfox is a robust, 2-place, fabric-covered taildragger with exceptional short-field capability, and this 1997 Model 4-1200 is available for $42,000 on AircraftForSale.

First flown in 1991, the Model 4 improved on the preceding three Kitfoxes by utilizing a laminar-flow airfoil and improved flaperons. The Model 4-1200 was the final version of the Model 4 and added a strengthened airframe that increased the gross weight significantly to 1,200 pounds. The -1200 also incorporated a larger rudder and vertical stabilizer for improved control authority.

With 7,363 hours on the airframe, this particular Kitfox has seen significant use, but it appears to have been very well cared for. With no reported damage history and an airframe and fabric rated at 8/10, it appears to be a well-sorted and well cared for example with plenty of life left. 

Kitfoxes are available with a variety of engines, and this example sports a four-cylinder Jabiru. One Kitfox owner with the same setup reports a 95 mph cruise speed while burning only 3 gallons per hour. The same owner reports seeing healthy climb rates of 1,200 feet per minute. 

Unlike many aircraft types, the Kitfox has foldable wings. This enables the airplane to be tucked into a small corner of a standard aircraft hangar, presenting the option of subletting a section of another renter’s hangar for relatively little rent. Alternatively, the excellent short-field performance opens up the possibility of landing in a large backyard and using a standard car garage as a hangar.

Today’s bargain blends vintage charm with massive flexibility in a package that is as comfortable touring weekend fly-ins as it is exploring remote backcountry destinations. First flown in 1944, the Stinson 108 was developed as a robust, four-place taildragger with a steel tube fuselage and fabric covering. This particular example sports a metalized wing, eliminating expensive wing fabric replacement down the road, and is available for $45,000 on AircraftForSale.

Stinsons have the reputation of being well-mannered taildraggers. Compared to the relatively short-coupled Piper Pacers, for example, they are easy to manage during takeoff and landing. Crosswind handling is helped by the smaller vertical stabilizer of the -2 version, which is less prone to weathervaning. The main landing gear features actual shock absorbers with damping to prevent a springboard effect during firm touchdowns. 

With a 165-horsepower Franklin six-cylinder engine up front, this Stinson has more power than most comparable Cessna 170s or Piper Pacers, with a throaty growl to boot. While less common than Continentals or Lycomings, a number of companies provide replacement parts. Franklin owners have overwhelmingly positive feedback about their engines, cautioning only that maintenance should be reserved for mechanics with an intimate knowledge of the type.

This Stinson and its engine are both relatively low-time, with 2,400 hours on the airframe and only 595 hours since major overhaul (SMOH) on the engine. The striking paint is reportedly in good condition, and the airplane includes a matching set of wheel pants. The interior upholstery and carpet look to be in correspondingly good condition, ready to make a great first impression on any passengers.

This Stinson 108 is priced at nearly half the going rate for comparable Cessna 170s and is available for $45,000 on AircraftForSale.

For today’s bargain, we travel north to Ontario, Canada, where a well-sorted 1964 Piper PA-28-140 Cherokee Cruiser awaits. Despite the 140 in the model name, this Cherokee features a Lycoming O-320-E3D that provides an additional 10-20 horsepower for more spritely performance and is available for CAD $95,000 on AircraftForSale.

Among the most popular general aviation types ever built, the Piper Cherokee series is also one of the most straightforward to own and maintain. Parts and maintenance expertise are both easily sourced, even in remote regions. This particular example has been cared for and flown regularly for the past several years, with many flights and adventures having been documented with extensive photography on social media.

Unlike many Cherokees of the era, C-FROU sports an exceptionally clean panel layout. A traditional “six-pack” is positioned in front of the pilot, and the circuit breakers have been neatly organized on the right side of the panel. A solid RAM mount is also neatly installed, positioning a phone or tablet within easy reach, just above the throttle and mixture. The avionics have also been upgraded, with a new Avidyne audio panel, GPS/NAV/COM units, and ADS-B in and out, making for a thoroughly modern stack.
